Disappointing. Sad because I love this man

I have seen David Sedaris several times. I own all his books and enjoy reading his essays and hearing him on public radio. I admire his snarky wit and always enjoy hearing the words straight from the man who wrote them. I have always been entertained. I have sat and listened to David Sedaris and had tears stream down my face because of laughter. This event was lacking for me, however. He seemed . . . . just not connected. There was an underlying energy of meanness. He does shock, sometimes with sexual crassness, sometimes with just plain gross stories (baby sea turtles comes to mind) and all of us familiar with his work expect this and usually appreciate it. We can find the humor in it, or appreciate the narrative at least. However, this time it felt like he wanted to shock his audience for more selfish reasons. It was almost like watching a favored child test his limits by deliberately shocking those who adore him and watching to see what their reactions are. The laughter around me felt forced - like "well it's David Sedaris saying this, so it must be funny." What was said was not always funny. Or warm. Or witty. Many times it was sad, or empty, or hollow. He did not seem to want to be there with us, did not seem connected to us. I will see him again, however, with the hope that this was just an off night for him, that he truly wants to spend some time with us, not just for the paycheck, but to connect.
